Internship Opportunity For Individuals With Disabilities

Rosemary Kennedy Initiative from VSA is funding an internship for individuals with disabilities, between the ages of 18 to 25. Excerpt from Rosemary Kennedy Initiative from VSA. During July and August, Ms Peterson will work with four individuals with disabilities, between the ages of 18 to 25, who are interested in a possible position and invitation to join company in the fall 2012. The individuals must have a documented disability, be interested in movement exploration, provide their own transportation and be available for weekly training after July 1st. The paid internship will help young individuals build skills to discover athleticism, collaboration and creativity towards the path of a professional performer. Speech Therapy Center is working this holiday season to assist community organizations with their fundraisers and/or resource collection drives. We are thankful for the wonderful families that we have. The families are thankful for the wonderful therapy they receive. So it is time to pay it forward. The following are two organizations that we are collecting for: The Early Learning Coalition The Early Learning Coalition and Domino’s Pizza have collaborated to bring you a pizza deal like no other. The ELC is selling Slice the Price cards for $10.00 each. This reusable discount card will give you one FREE large pizza for every large pizza you buy at regular price from now until June 30, 2012. That means you buy three large pizzas and get three more free, with no limits on the toppings. There is no limit on the number of times you can use the card until then, but using it just once pays for itself. The ELC will receive 50 percent of the proceeds of each Slice the Price card bought. Maximizing Holiday Fun with Special Needs

As a parent you look forward to spending time with your child during the holiday season. This can prove to be difficult when your child has trouble expressing their needs and/or communicating with others. These difficulties may become exacerbated during the holidays, due to higher demands to communicate abstract ideas such as what they want on their wish lists as well as following social routines with unfamiliar friends or family members. Furthermore, if your child has autism, other obstacles you may encounter include breaks in routine, sensory overload from increased noise level of music and conversation, intolerable tastes and smells of unfamiliar holiday foods, and increased occurrence of touch due to hugging and kissing by distant relatives. Tips that you can use to stimulate your child during the family festivities: Role-play the situations that your child will encounter beforehand so that your child will be less surprised with what is to come. Expose your child to typical words that they will hear during the holidays so that they play a larger role in the festivities (i.e. Santa, tree, menorah, turkey). Practice some simple carrier phrases. For example, “I like the [food name],” “I see [vocabulary word].” Practice a script for…
